AAUW Funding Opportunities |
AAUW celebrated its 140th anniversary. When AAUW began in 1881, few women had the opportunity to pursue a college degree — prompting founder Marion Talbot to support a fund for women’s education. Today, women outnumber men in earning degrees at nearly every level. Yet our work is far from done.
Our nonpartisan, nonprofit organization has more than 170,000 members and supporters across the United States, as well as 1,000 local branches and 800 college and university partners. Since AAUW’s founding in 1881, our members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day — educational, social, economic, and political.
Through research, education, and advocacy, AAUW is committed to ensuring that everyone gets the same opportunity to learn, earn and lead. AAUW takes positions on the fundamental issues of the day affecting women and girls — educational, social, economic, and political. Our programs aim to move women forward—and we fight for policies that support our goals.
AAUW Fellowships and Grants Application Season Open August 1st! AAUW is now welcoming applications for all of our fellowships and grants programs.
“Pay equity has dominated headlines this year, but change has yet to reach our pocketbooks and bank accounts. Today’s news is that women still make 82 cents on the dollar compared to men. And the numbers are dramatically worse for Black women (62 cents) and Latinas (54 cents) compared to white men.
Take AAUW Work Smart Online, a free one-hour salary negotiation course. It is designed to help women negotiate for a new job, raise, or promotion.
AAUW Diversity Statement
In principle and in practice, AAUW values and seeks an inclusive membership, workforce, leadership team, and board of directors. There shall be no barriers to full participation in this organization on the basis of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, geographical location, national origin, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status.
AAUW Educational Grants and Legal Advocacy Fund
AAUW is well-known for its many categories of educational and occupational grants and fellowships of about $4 million annually to women in the U.S. and abroad. AAUW also provides much-needed financial support for litigation combating sex discrimination in the workplace and higher education. These programs have been fully funded into the future as a result of decades of grass-roots fundraising.
Public Policy
AAUW uses lobbying and grassroots efforts to advance policies that break through educational and economic barriers for women. Members receive information about AAUW’s position on federal, state, and local issues. We then address these issues, which affect the lives of women and families, with our own governmental representatives. Education that promotes gender fairness, equity, and diversity is the top public policy issue among AAUW members. We also support achieving economic self-sufficiency for all women and guaranteeing equality, individual rights, and social justice for a diverse society.
AAUW Lobby Corps
AAUW Capitol Hill Lobby Corps, which was suspended in Fall 2020 due to the COVID pandemic, previously met bimonthly when Congress was in session, to lobby on Capitol Hill on issues that affect AAUW’s mission. AAUW Lobby Corps will again be activated when safe to do so to work to transform AAUW’s legislative priorities into Federal Congressional action.
Intersectional. Inclusive. Intergenerational. Empowering.
Though we are nonpartisan, we are not values-neutral: We fight to remove the barriers and biases that stand in the way of gender equity. We train women to negotiate for pay and benefits and to pursue leadership roles. And we advocate for federal, state, and local laws and policies to ensure equity and end discrimination.
Economic Security
We’ve been working to narrow the gender pay gap, which greets women as soon as they enter the workforce and widens throughout their working lives. Unequal wages stand in the way of a woman’s ability to pay off student debt, build wealth, and save for a secure retirement.
Education
We champion equal opportunities in education. Though more than 60% of college graduates are women, they face barriers and biases throughout their schooling. From preschool to graduate school, girls and women are unconsciously steered into certain fields of study and away from more lucrative ones, such as STEM.
Advocacy
Our members, supporters, and staff work on local, state, and federal levels to support laws and policies that enable women’s success. Our work in statehouses and the U.S. Capitol has helped pass hundreds of pieces of legislation. Our Legal Advocacy team has supported plaintiffs in more than 125 gender equity legal cases.
